Adding Chutes to Create a Cal. Gorilla Love Nest
While Koko and Ndume are waiting for the Gorilla Foundation to complete the fundraising and development of the Maui Ape Preserve (MAP) we are completing some modest enhancements to their current Northern California habitat, to make the waiting more enjoyable and productive.

As Koko turns 35 on July 4th, and Ndume approaches 25, we are ever more conscious of the ticking clock and Koko’s dearest desire to become a mother. One important factor that may encourage mating is more privacy.

There is an existing building, attached to their common outdoor enclosure, that has historically been primarily Ndume’s domain, but could become the ideal interim love nest. The only obstacle is that the building currently has only one transfer chute (i.e., exit/entrance) connecting the building to the outdoor enclosure, and hence is not accessible by Koko.

To make this setting comfortable and practical for both gorillas, we would like to add a couple of transfer chutes to the building to ensure they have freedom of movement (see figure). This additional peace of mind is sometimes all a female gorilla needs to feel comfortable enough to initiate mating (in gorilla society, this is the female's role) and may encourage more togetherness as the gorillas await the move to Maui .

We’ll keep you posted.
